Background

In 2022, the APA Commission for the Recognition of Specialties and Subspecialties in Professional Psychology (CRSSPP) recognized the specialty in PA/PD and the subspecialty in Psychoanalysis. This is the first time in history that APA has formally recognized psychoanalytic and psychodynamic psychology as part of the discipline of psychology.

In 2024, Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytic Psychology specialty postdocs were listed by APPIC, and recognized by the CoA for APA-approval, and the American Board of Professional Psychology recognized the PA/PD specialty and Psychoanalysis subspecialty for board certification.

This conference represents a crucial step in developing comprehensive training standards, competency models, and educational pathways for the specialty and subspecialty.

Conference Objectives

The primary purpose of this working conference is to advance education and training in the Psychoanalytic and Psychodynamic Psychology specialty and subspecialty in Psychoanalysis through:

Post-Conference Activities

The work and connections established during the conference will continue through several important follow-up activities:

Documentation and Dissemination

Ongoing Engagement

A mechanism for ongoing communication and engagement with stakeholders will be established. This could involve a listserv, online forum, or regular follow-up meetings. This ensures that the consensus-building process continues beyond the conference itself.

Implementation and Evaluation

We will develop a plan for implementing the agreed-upon solutions and evaluating their impact. This will involve clear timelines, responsibilities, and metrics for success to ensure accountability and progress.

Resources Development

Conference outcomes will be translated into practical resources for all levels of training, including:

  • Model curricula and syllabi
  • Implementation guides for programs at different training levels
  • Competency assessment tools
  • Training taxonomies specific to each educational level
  • Best practices documentation
